Sequoyah Students win Fire Safety Art Contest

Two Sequoyah elementary students won first place in a Fire Safety Art Contest and rode to school in a fire truck!

Students from the Tulsa area participated in a fire safety art contest where the winners would get to ride to school in a fire truck. Teachers were given the rules of the contest and a short video to show to the class about fire safety. The theme this year was Look, Listen, and Learn and the contest was open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Tulsa. This is the FIRST time the TFD has participated in this annual contest, it went so well that they are considering making it an annual event.

After watching the video and reading a flyer, the students then created a poster that would represent all of the information on one 8½" X 14" piece of paper. This activity really embedded the message in their mind and may help save a life if the student is in a house fire.

Two students from Sequoyah elementary won first place!

First place 4th grade: Keyli Guerra Arellano from Mrs. Tolbert’s class.
First place 5th grade: Zane Keathley from Mrs. Ryan’s class.

"I am fortunate to work at Sequoyah where our Principal, Raye Nero, truly believes in the value of the arts in education and the benefits they bring to our students.  We also have a great supporter of the arts with our superintendent, Deborah Gist.  She could have cut the arts in the TPS budget but she has continued to save our arts.  For that, our TPS students are extremely fortunate." Ms. Catherine Decamp, Art Teacher

Keyli rode to school in a fire truck on Wednesday, October 11th and Zane rode to school in a fire truck from Station 3 on Friday, October 12th. Both students were interviewed by local TV stations with big smiles.
